The BC Racquetball Association (BCRA) and the BC Athlete Assistance Program (AAP)

Revised June 2008

The BC Athlete Assistance Program (BC AAP) is an athlete-centred program of financial assistance funded and administered by the Sport and Recreation Branch of the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts. BC AAP seeks to recognize and support BC high performance athletes striving to represent the Province and Canada in athletic competition. Athletes who have demonstrated the potential and commitment to attain this level of excellence can qualify for different levels of financial support based on relative levels of development and competition achieved within the overall limits of funds available.

The program seeks to relieve some of the pressures associated with training and competition needs when participating in provincial, national and international sport events. The Sport and Recreation Branch intends that BC AAP focus on those athletes who are in the position to compete for Team BC and are just below those receiving Sport Canada funding. This financial assistance will ensure a continuum of support for the development of national and international class BC athletes.

The purpose of BC AAP is to provide financial support to partially offset training and competition costs for qualified BC high performance athletes striving to achieve podium performances while representing British Columbia at Canada Games and/or Canada at identified international multi-sport games.

In order to support emerging high-performance athletes, the BCRA BC AAP is available to qualified athletes. To qualify, the athlete must:

           1. be a resident of BC

      2. be 25 years of age or less

      3. be at least 14 years old (or, if younger than 14, be ranked in the top 2 in the 16&Under division)

      4. if a student, maintain a school average of at least 65%.

      5. play in at least 2 BCRA sanctioned tournaments per year, including either Junior Provincials or Senior Provincials

      6. play in at least one of the Junior National, Senior National or Junior World Racquetball Championships

      7. train at least 10 hours per week, under the direction of an NCCP level 3 coach, during the training season (September to May)

      8. provide the name of that NCCP level 3 coach to the BCRA

      9. complete a letter of application to the BCRA selection committee, describing the athlete’s goals and training and competition plans for the upcoming year

      10. be a member in good standing with the BCRA

      11. adhere to the BC AAP Guidelines, Policies and Procedures, as described at http://www.tsa.gov.bc.ca/sport/programs/bcapp_pso.htm

Only nominated athletes may apply and, if interested, must apply by July 1st each year. Qualified applicants will then be ranked based on the Racquetball Canada ranking in effect each July 15th. The top ranked qualified individuals will be selected and BC AAP amounts awarded in order of that ranking, until all available funds have been distributed. Where possible, at least one male and one female will be selected in each year that the BCRA qualifies for the BC AAP.

The selection committee will be normally composed of the President, the Coaching Coordinator, and the Racquetball Canada representative. Should any of these individuals for some reason be in a conflict of interest, they will be replaced by a person named by the BCRA Board of Directors.
